Medical Microbiologist, Clinical Academic Position – London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, ON

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, London Health Sciences Centre, and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, is seeking a Medical Microbiologist for a full-time clinical academic appointment. 

Qualifications and Position Profile: Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification in Medical Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent. Applicants must have an MD or equivalent degree and must be eligible for licensure by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful applicant will be expected to obtain third party medico-legal insurance as provided through the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent. Candidates will hold a full-time, limited-term, clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor or a continuing appointment as Associate or Full Professor, depending upon experience and qualifications at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to support the Microbiology program and consultative services, as well as Infection Prevention and Control consultative services. Experience and or interest in infection control would be beneficial; mentorship and support will be provided as needed. There will be opportunities to develop relevant program protocols, procedures and research initiatives. The development and oversight of quality improvement programs and participation in the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program will be opportunities as well. Participation in a shared after-hours on-call service is expected.

Candidates must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all members of the health care team. The candidate will also have a commitment to and demonstrated aptitude for teaching, and will have opportunities to teach and supervise at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. The candidate will be supported to engage in academic research and other creative professional activities.

The Service and Department: The Microbiology Program provides diagnostic and consultative support to seven healthcare centres within London and surrounding region. Diagnostic services include general bacteriology, mycology, and virology with over 350,000 specimens received per year. The laboratory is based in a modern facility and is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies. A dedicated molecular microbiology suite was constructed in 2020. Installment of Total Laboratory Automation equipment for culture-based microbiology has started and will ensure that the microbiology laboratory will be able to meet current and future diagnostic needs.

Compensation: Compensation for this position will be primarily composed of hospital funding aligned with the Ontario MOH Laboratory Medicine Funding Framework Agreement.
