2021 John G. Fitzgerald Award Recipient – Dr. Allison McGeer

It is a tremendous honour for the CACMID board to present the 2021 John B. Fitzgerald Award to Dr. Allison McGeer. This award recognizes Canadian Microbiologists that have significantly advanced the field of medical microbiology through their contributions to clinical, academic, and/or educational pillars.

Dr. Allison McGeer is a microbiologist and Director of Infection Control at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Additionally, she is a professor in the Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. Dr. McGeer is nationally and internationally recognized for her research using surveillance tools to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Among her many other roles, she serves on immunization and infection-control committees at the national and provincial levels. More recently, Dr. McGeer has been advancing knowledge of COVID-19 with her CIHR funded work. With over 300 publications and numerous impressive career achievements, Dr. McGeer is the deserving recipient of the 2021 John G Fitzgerald CACMID Outstanding Microbiologist Award.
