Public Health Ontario (PHO) is a provincial crown agency that provides scientific and technical advice and support to those working across sectors to protect and promote the health of Ontarians. We operate the provincial public health laboratory service. For our partners and clients — government, public health practitioners, hospitals and other health care facilities, community laboratories, front-line health workers and researchers — we provide the scientific evidence and expert guidance to enable informed decisions and actions, and to anticipate and respond to emerging public health issues. Through our eleven fully accredited laboratory sites, we respond to provincial and local service needs and process more than six million tests each year providing clinical and environmental laboratory testing and related expert advice, services and research in support of the prevention and control of communicable diseases across Ontario.

PHO is seeking a Chief, Microbiology and Laboratory Science to provide executive and scientific leadership for Microbiology and Laboratory Science. This includes quality medical and clinical oversight and decision making for public health and reference microbiology programs and service delivery at PHO, and oversight of the PHO microbiology research agenda. The Chief will contribute to developing scientific, academic and practice public health strategies, planning and execution for the organization as a whole.

The Chief will have exemplary leadership and interpersonal skills combined with formal scientific or public health professional training at a post graduate level. The Chief will have a record of leadership accomplishment over 10+ years’ in a highly specialized and complex scientific environment with a focus on medical and clinical microbiology including methodology development, applied research and the provision of medical advisory services and clinical interpretation of laboratory testing.

Qualified candidates will be eligible for an academic appointment at an Ontario University at the rank of Associate Professor or higher; have a PhD from an accredited college or university and Fellow of the Canadian College of Microbiologists (FCCM) and/or a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (D(ABBM)) PhD. A Certified Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Specialist in Medical Microbiology is preferred.
