Do you have an interesting clinical case to share at the 2012 Conference?

Do you have an interesting case to share?

We are looking for the most difficult and head-scratching cases for presentation during this interactive session. The audience along with the discussants work through the case trying to solve it. An audience response system will be used.

Please submit your most interesting clinical and laboratory cases for consideration by sending a brief outline of the case (including investigations, diagnosis and treatment) and a short discussion on the instructive value of the case (about 200 words). We like a variety of cases so they can be lengthy and complicated or quick and short – you decide what you think might be of educational value to the audience. These cases will be the basis for discussion of clinical and laboratory diagnosis, clinical management, infection control and other relevant aspects.

If your case is selected, we will work with you to prepare both your slide presentation for the meeting and an abstract of the case (that does not give away the answer) that is suitable for publication in the conference on-line only supplement of the Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology. Your slide presentation of the case for the meeting will include the clinical presentation, investigations and management, as well as the interactive audience questions.

The deadline for submission of clinical cases is January 24, 2012. Cases must be submitted by email to Dr. Michael Libman, michael.libman@mcgill.ca.

DO NOT SUBMIT THE CASES THROUGH THE REGULAR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION PROCESS.

If your case is accepted for presentation, you will be notified on or around February 15, 2012. You can expect to be involved in presenting and discussing the case during the Clinical Vignettes session, Saturday May 5. Those cases not selected for presentation as a clinical vignette may be accepted for poster presentation as a case report.

If you have any questions, please contact:

Michael Libman – michael.libman@mcgill.ca Tel.: (514) 934-1934 ext 42811

Now accepting nominations for the inaugural John G. FitzGerald - CACMID award, to be presented at the Vancouver annual conference.

This award is given annually to a Canadian Microbiologist who has significantly advanced the field of medical microbiology in his/her area of specialty within this field. The award is focused on those individuals who have been outstanding in any aspects of medical microbiology. This includes clinical service or research or teaching or a combination of all three. There are no restrictions as to the stage of the awardees career. The John G. FitzGerald-CACMID award is given once a year at the annual CACMID meeting. The selected recipient is determined by first a call for nominations from the CACMID board 6-8 months in advance of the CACMID meeting. The nominations are expected to come from the Canadian Microbiology community at large. The CACMID board will then meet three months before the annual CACMID meeting and vote for a recipient from the nominations received. The award will consist of $1000 and a plaque to the recipient. The award winner’s name will also appear on a large plaque along with past recipients. The recipient will be invited to the annual CACMID meeting to receive the award. Travel and accommodation expenses of the recipient will be reimbursed by CACMID.

The award is named after Dr. John FitzGerald, a pioneer in the field of Medical Microbiology in Canada. Dr. FitzGerald was born in Drayton, Ontario in 1882. After graduating medical school at the University of Toronto, he studied at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and Brussels. He soon returned to Canada where in 1914, Dr. FitzGerald founded Connaught Laboratories in partnership with the University of Toronto. It was at Connaught Laboratories that Dr. FitzGerald manufactured Canada’s first safe and effective rabies vaccine and diphtheria anti-toxin. Dr. FitzGerald is also regarded as one of the founding fathers of the Laboratory Section meetings of the Canadian Public Health Association that ultimately became the CACMID annual meeting.

It is to Dr. FitzGerald’s extraordinary contributions to Medical Microbiology in Canada that this award is dedicated.

Nominations are Due January 31, 2012.

Back in Vancouver by popular demand!

On behalf of AMMI Canada and CACMID, we invite you to join us in Vancouver from May 3rd to 5th for our annual conference.

The Annual AMMI Canada – CACMID Conference is THE Canadian meeting for physicians, microbiologists, researchers, laboratory technologists, and students in the areas of infectious diseases and medical microbiology. The Program Planning Committee has already had meetings to create a program that will build from the success of previous conferences and the suggestions that our attendees and association members offer. There will be plenary sessions, integrated symposia, oral presentations, poster sessions, exhibits, the clinical vignettes, a trainees’ day, CCM Workshop, QM Seminar and a special lecture. In addition, the Conference will host the meetings of our associated organizations.

Vancouver, surrounded by mountains and ocean, was the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world’s most livable cities for five straight years. A popular tourist destination with countless opportunities for outdoor activities, a thriving art scene, and world-class restaurants representing a variety of international cuisines. It has also been named the Top Tourist Destination in Canada for five straight years! Take advantage of Vancouver’s mild climate to get an early start on summer.

The AMMI Canada – CACMID Annual Conference 2012 in Vancouver will provide you with the latest information in the fields of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. As importantly, it will provide opportunities to reconnect with old friends and colleagues, and meet new ones.

We encourage you to present your research by submitting abstracts for oral or poster presentation. If you are a student or trainee, there are a number of awards available to you. Build your presentation skills before an always friendly and supportive audience.

We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver in May!
