Clinical Vignettes

Submission Deadline: Sunday, December 1, 2019

Do you have a cool and/or fascinating case to share?

We are looking for challenging and head-scratching cases, with a clear teaching point or two, for presentation during this popular interactive session. The audience, using an audience response system, will work through the case and attempt to solve it in the best tradition of famous sleuths like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot.

Please consider submitting your most interesting clinical and laboratory cases for consideration by sending a brief outline of the case including: clinical presentation, investigations, diagnosis and treatment, and a short discussion on the instructive value of the case (about 200 words). Clearly identify the take-home message that you would like your case to illustrate. Please include two multiple-choice questions that would be suitable for the “clicker” audience response system. We like a variety of cases; they can be lengthy and complicated or quick and simple – you decide what you think might be of interest and of educational value for the audience. The audience consists of clinicians and laboratorians at all stages in their careers, as such the ideal cases provide a basis for a vigorous discussion on many relevant aspects.

If your case is selected, we will work with you to prepare slides for presentation at the meeting. Your final slide presentation of the case will include a description of the clinical presentation, investigations and management, as well as the interactive audience questions. Selected presenters will also have the opportunity for their clinical vignettes to be published in the official Journal of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (JAMMI) following the conference.

Cases will be adjudicated based on:

  • purpose (how representative and relevant the topic is to the audience)
  • format (progressive disclosure of case)
  • novelty of case (potential for interesting learning points for the audience)
  • quality of writing of submitted abstract (style points)

You will be notified on or around December 16, 2019 whether your case has been selected. You can expect to be involved in presenting and discussing the case during the clinical vignette’s session, Saturday, May 2, 2020.

Those cases not selected for presentation as a clinical vignette will be considered for poster presentation as a case report.

Submission Deadline December 1, 2019.

DO NOT submit the cases through the regular abstract submission process.Cases must be submitted by email to meetings@ammi.ca.
